Are we settling for a flawed justice system?

*CNN news brings us an opinion of how justice has been treating us.

Lynn Smith a CNN anchor who has been working since March 2019 talks about how justice is being given so differently based on what your race is and if you have money or not.

Smith recently talked about a young boy, Deandre Somerville who missed jury duty because he was to busy helping his grandpa and working on his daily routine. Due to missing jury, he was punished and sent to prison for ten days to learn the importance of jury duty. Somerville went through a lot in prison and he said that he learned his lesson. Smith wonders if missing jury matters more than all the lives that have been taken away by people who drive drunk and are only punish with probation.

After learning what Someville went went through in prison, Smith thought that it was too much of a punish just because he missed jury duty. I definitely agree that the punishment that he received was too much. Smith added a few examples to demonstrate that justice is failing us, she included a case where a young guy named Ethan Couch was driving drunk and caused the death of four people and paralyzing one. He only received probation, which he violated and received only two years of prison. This demonstrates how justice is being injustice to society.

In my opinion, we are losing the belief of what justice really means. We should be punishing those who commit felonies because they chose to and stop punishing those who are just trying to be successful in life. Smith is right to think that justice seems to be out of place and only affecting minorities. We as a society should start workiing together to improve our justice and to learn to punish those who really deserve to be in prison because their actions affected families.

Someville is a great example that our justice system is failing us and we are letting it happened we need a change and we need to start to show that we care for those who have lost their life because of the irresponsibility of a drunk driver.
